PHG Foundation Darwin Film and Article competition prize-giving
11th June 2009 at Christ’s College, Cambridge
The Foundation for Genomics and Population Health (PHG Foundation) works to drive the translation of advances in genomics and biomedicine into better health.
In recognition of the bicentenary of Charles Darwin’s birth in 2009, his pivotal role in shaping current understanding of genetics and biology, and our unique location in Cambridge, the Foundation invited sixth-form and undergraduate students in Cambridgeshire to enter a competition to produce a short filmed or written piece responding to one of two set questions:
Entries were judged by the PHG Foundation in conjunction with Dr Matthew Higgins, Director of Studies for Natural Sciences at Darwin's own Christ's College, Cambridge.
Prizes were awarded at a reception at Christ's College on 11 June 2009, by kind permission of the Master and Fellows. Winners, along with teachers, family members and PHG Foundation staff, were welcomed to Christ’s by President Professor Martin Johnson, and given a tour of the Darwin exhibits by Mrs Paula Stirling, Director of Admissions.
The winners were:
Sean Brennan (Robinson College, Cambridge)
Yuming Mei (Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge)
Miranda Robbins (Perse Upper School, Cambridge).
Zoltan Soltesz (Trinity College, Cambridge)
Clockwise from left: Charles Darwin (onlooker, Christ’s College), Zoltan Soltesz (winner), Sean Brennan (winner), Matthew Higgins (judge, Christ’s College), Philippa Brice (judge, PHG Foundation), Yuming Mei (winner), Miranda Robbins (winner).
