12 February 2009: Want to know more about the ethical issues surrounding research databases?

UK Biobank Ethics and Governance Council is hosting a public presentation and discussion, at which it will report on its activities and invite questions about its work. A representative from UK Biobank will also be present.. All welcome, attendance is free and includes drinks and nibbles.

UK Biobank is a long-term project to build a major resource of data and samples with the participation of 500 000 individuals aged 40-69. The project was launched in 2007, with Cardiff as its first centre of recruitment in Wales. 18 000 people from this region have agreed to participate in the project, which will continue to recruit nationally over the next few years.

This resource will support a diverse range of research intended to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses (such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and dementia), and the promotion of health throughout society.

The UK Biobank Ethics and Governance Council is an independent monitoring body that advises on the ethical framework under which UK Biobank operates.

26 February 2009: Clinical Medicine in the Genome Era

An International Symposium to review recent developments and current trends in the applications of genome science and technology to clinical medicine and population health.

Sessions will include: Pharmacogenomics, Translational Medicine, and Personalised Medicine. Featured speakers include: Sir David Weatherall of Oxford University, Muin Khoury of CDC Centre for Population Genomics, and Ron Zimmern of the PHG Foundation.
