1 July 2010: Methods for Evaluating Medical Tests and Biomarkers: 2nd International Symposium

The 2010 event is specifically aimed at bringing together researchers from the diverse reaches of test evaluation, from in vitro test developers, industry and regulatory representatives, through to methodologists, guideline developers and practising clinicians, in the hope of improving current understanding through knowledge exchange, and forging diverse experiences and perspectives to delineate the future direction of diagnostic test research.

Submission deadline: 31st March 2010. Early-bird registration now open - closes 14th May 2010: £325 (Not-for-profit) or £650 (Commercial)

7 July 2010: Faculty of Public Health Annual Conference 2010

The next decade: What is the future of public health?  The 2010 FPH annual conference aims to answer this question. Leaders in public health and public life will be asked to debate the big public health questions from where cash should be spent to policies targeting all stages of life from childhood to old age.

Keynote speaker: Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley CBE MP.  Other speakers include Hilary Burton of the PHG Foundation.

Genetics Day on the Hill brings together a cross-section of the health community--including disease advocacy organizations, researchers, healthcare providers, industry representatives, students, families, and individuals. Participants visit the offices of their elected officials to educate Congress about health and healthcare. As Congress heatedly debates health reform, there is no better time for health advocates to collaborate with policymakers on transforming systems for what matters: improved health.

20 July 2010: Early Diagnosis & Prevention: Technology, social marketing and primary care

Venue:  LondonThis seminar will look at what more can be done to improve the early diagnosis and prevention of illness - focusing on the role of new technology in diagnosis and monitoring, on what more can be done to encourage research and innovation in healthcare, and the challenges faced in technology adoption.  Further sessions also examine the role of primary care in early diagnosis, including opportunities through increased access to diagnostic equipment in GP-led health centres and Polyclinics, and what more can be done to get across healthy living and prevention campaigns to the general population, with reference to expected pressures on government social marketing budgets. Planned sessions will focus on: Public health, early diagnosis and prevention: current issues and challenges; Early diagnosis and prevention: the economic case; Social marketing and prevention of lifestyle-related disease; Early diagnosis and cancer; Early diagnosis and prevention: primary care and improving the patient pathway; New technology and NHS staff: awareness, training and empowerment; Technology adoption: working through the system; Innovation and technology: improving the early detection and treatment of disease; and The next steps in the delivery of the early diagnosis and prevention agenda.  The agenda is copied below my signature, and a regularly updated version is available to view online.Supported by GE Healthcare, this seminar is organised impartially and independently by the Westminster Health Forum.
