Open meetings for Human Genetics Commission

14 June 2000   |   By Dr Alison Stewart   |   News story
At its second meeting, on 18 May, the Human Genetics Commission took the radical (for the UK) step of deciding that from 2001 all of its main meetings should be open to the public, as observers. This decision is in line with the Commission's avowed intention of being as open and accountable as possible. The HGC also agreed to establish a "patient panel" to ensure that the views of patient groups are effectively conveyed to it. Three subgroups of the Commission have been established (on genetic testing, horizon scanning and public involvement in genetics), together with a working group on the storage, protection and use of genetic information. These groups contain co-opted members as well as representatives from the HGC itself. Their membership and terms of reference can be read on the HGC web site.
