Genome analytics £10 million separate from 100K Genomes cash

3 December 2013

The Department of Health has confirmed that funding for the £10 million competition to encourage UK businesses to develop improved genome analysis tools to support the 100,000 Genomes Project (see previous news) is separate from the £100 million funding for the Genomes Project itself.

The £10 million additional funding is from the Small Business Research Initiative budget and not that of Genomics England, although Genomics England will as announced manage the competition for the Department of Health.

In all, this is even better news for the UK genomics community, since it means £10 million extra funding. The decision for Genomics England to manage the competition is also a wise one, since they will obviously be best placed to determine what the 100,000 Genomes Project most needs and which applicants appear to be best placed to deliver it if funded.
