Our Work

Education and training

We made a major contribution to the development of strategies to create a genetically literate health service workforce (as envisaged by the Department of Health in its 2003 White Paper Our Inheritance Our Future). These are set out in our report Addressing Genetics, Delivering Health.

In addition to acting in a consultancy role for the National Genetics Education and Development Centre in Birmingham, we have provided teaching on the principles of public health genomics, genetics in healthcare and ethical, legal and social issues associated with modern biology and health to the next generation of health professionals, policy specialists and others. This has included multiple courses and events ranging from single lectures and half-day seminars to our biennial five-day intensive Genetics and Health Policy course

As the PHGU we provided training placements for specialist registrars in public health, and have written a textbook, Genetics, Health Care and Public Policy, recently published by Cambridge University Press.
