Julian Hitchcock - Associate

Julian Hitchcock became an Associate of the PHG Foundation in 2011. He is an intellectual property and life sciences lawyer at Field Fisher Waterhouse LLP, with a particular focus on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and devices. Julian specialises in technology translation and patent enforcement and is a leading authority on the law and regulation of regenerative medicine, stem cells and genomics. He has long and comprehensive experience in his practice area, works for a wide range of life science clients.

Julian's legal practice is complemented by his involvement in a range of policy and commercial matters. An expert in Chinese and Indian stem cell patenting policy, he has served as a Research Fellow at the Global Biopolitics Research Group at King’s College London. Formerly Executive Director of the East of England Stem Cell Network and an Interested Party at the EMA's Committee for Advanced Therapies, he founded the Federation for Advanced Therapies in Europe (CellFate) in 2010 as a pro-translational and lobbying organisation. His “ABC” (Academic, Business, Clinical) evenings at the University of Cambridge became a cornerstone of the region's stem cell life, attracting speakers and audiences from throughout the UK and Europe. He is a mentor for the Cambridge MBA course and teaches intellectual property on the University's Masters in Bioscience Enterprise course and other courses. He also acts as tutor for the Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning, with which he is launching an international summer school in biotechnology enterprise in July 2011.

Julian is in demand for speaking engagements in the UK and overseas. A one-time BBC producer and TV lawyer, he takes a close interest in responsible and effective science media.
