We need to raise money to fund our current and future work. As a registered charity we take our public benefit obligations seriously; at the same time we will be discreet and ethical in our dealings with consultancy clients. The following principles underpin our external relationships.

Independence, integrity and transparency

We will withdraw from any activity that places our independence at risk. We will not allow direct control over our methods or outcomes in return for grants, donations or sponsorship. However for privately-commissioned consultancy we will follow normal business practice in relation to confidentiality, methods, publication etc; such terms will be agreed in writing.

We expect to be open and transparent about our relationships, partners and funding, including what each party is contributing and the benefits they will receive. Professional standards of conduct and ethics will take precedence over financial interests.

Coherence with our charitable purpose

We will not work with partners whose actions or values we think are detrimental to improving public health, for example the tobacco industry.

Mutual respect

We expect all partners to work cooperatively with due respect for each other’s assets, expertise and skills. We expect partners to tell us immediately if there are any matters that are likely to be prejudicial to our interests or reputation.

Conflicts of interest

For our public benefit work we will not offer guarantees that our outputs will be free of any content that may be disadvantageous to a partner’s interests. We may publish findings generated from objective analysis of available evidence, regardless of whether or not they support a partner’s position.

We expect all parties to be conscious of the potential for bias which may affect professional judgement, and to commit to agreeing measures for handling conflicts of interest.

We will tell partners if we are working with other organisations in a similar area to them, and expect the same in return.

We will not allow our name to be used to endorse particular products or services except where there is significant evidence of public benefit.

We may offer our partners speaker opportunities at PHG Foundation events but determined solely on merit and ‘fit’ with the programme as decided by us.

Privacy

We will not provide partners with direct access to our contacts other than those generated by the collaboration itself. We will not share or sell details of our networks or contacts.

Use of the Foundation’s name or logo

The Foundation will not allow its name, logo or branding to be used by collaborators without our express permission.
