Genomics and population health in an era of data-driven care

Outcome of an international meeting at Ayer’s Cliff, Canada, 7-11 September 2025

The impetus for convening this meeting came from recent progress in genomic and related research, particularly as a result of the accelerating generation and accumulation of data, the elaboration of new techniques in molecular biology and, especially, rapidly converging developments in computational intelligence (including machine learning, deep learning and generative AI). The objective was to explore the implications of these developments in relation to clinical medicine, population health, bioethics and public policy.

Twenty years after the groundbreaking meeting in Bellagio, Italy, that established the interdisciplinary enterprise of genomics and population health, the Ayer’s Cliff meeting brought together an international group of scholars, professionals and practitioners with diverse expertise, but who all share an interest in the connections between these fields and a desire to identify common aims, challenges and approaches.

The meeting was organised and convened by the PHG Foundation, and delivered with the support of the Centre of Genomics and Policy at McGill University, Montréal.  Members of the steering committee were:

  •  Professor Yann Joly (Canada)
  •  Professor Bartha Knoppers (Canada)
  •  Dr Muin Khoury (USA)
  •  Dr Eric Meslin (Canada)
  •  Dr Pete Mills (UK)
  •  Dr Ron Zimmern (UK)
