Genetic risk estimates for breast cancer

The lifetime risk of breast cancer for women in the general population is over 10%, and the risk of ovarian cancer is 1.8%. However, women who inherit mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have a much higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. These risks are also known as the penetrance of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations
